Cell
Cells are special rooms that can be encountered in Enter the Gungeon, placed throughout the Gungeon once certain requirements have been met. They serve as an important part of Enter the Gungeons meta-progression, as they each contain an incarcerated NPC who can be freed to appear on future runs, or in the Breach.
Cells each contain a special golden lock-a-doora (lock) which cannot be opened with regular Keys. Instead, they require a Cell Key to gain access. If a cell has generated in the current chamber, a random enemy on the floor is assigned to drop a Cell Key. The enemy chosen is more likely to be a powerful foe, such as a Gun Nut, and can even be the chamber boss.
List of Cells
Different cells have different requirements dictating when they are allowed to appear. This includes what chambers they can appear in, and what progression milestones must be met. All progression milestones are evaluated per save file.
Cells listed as appearing in Most chambers can appear in the Keep of the Lead Lord, Oubliette, Gungeon Proper, Abbey of the True Gun, Black Powder Mine, and Hollow.

Cut Content
- In pre-release versions of Enter the Gungeon, cell rooms did not have broad side areas. These side wings were likely added to permit entry to Cell rooms from the north. Additionally in these versions, the special golden lock securing the cell door was much smaller and did not appear to be alive.[1]
Notes
- Cells appear on the map with a unique icon,
- Since Cells only appear to facilitate NPC unlocks, once all NPCs have been unlocked, Cells will no longer appear.
- Cells can never appear in the R&G Dept., Resourceful Rat's Lair, or Bullet Hell.
