The Halls of Knowledge is the zeroth chamber of the Gungeon, serving as the tutorial level for the games in which it appears. Its single inhabitant, the long winded spirit Ser Manuel, uses this space to guide the player through the controls and mechanics of each game.

The Halls of Knowledge shown in Exit the Gungeon is not the same location as its Enter the Gungeon counterpart, since the Underbreach is located below the Forge. Instead, Ser Manuel has commandeered a room in the Underbreach and decorated it in an attempt to recreate his original chamber.
The state of the original Halls of Knowledge in Exit the Gungeon is unknown.

Layout

The Halls of Knowledge follows the exact same layout every time it is entered, and does not shift like the rest of the Gungeons chambers.

Enter the Gungeon ETG

The Halls of Knowledge consists of 18 rooms, most of which are strung together in a straight line from the entrance to the exit room. Because these room layouts are exactly the same each time, it is possible to count the exact number of enemies that appear in this chamber. Excluding Ser Manuel, the Halls of Knowledge contains 12 Bullet Kin, 1 Bandana Bullet Kin, 1 Pinhead, and 3 Red Shotgun Kin.

There are two brown chests in this chamber, one of which is spawned by Ser Manuel, the other being found in a small chest room. The contents of both of these chests are pre-determined, the first always giving the Pea Shooter, while the second always drops the AK-47.
Ser Manuel will also give the player a Medkit halfway through the tutorial in an attempt to teach them about active item use.

This floor has exactly one secret room, located in the same place each time, with the secret wall being uniquely pre-cracked to teach the player about secret rooms. This room contains the corporeal remains of Ser Manuel, as well as the Old Knight's Shield and Old Knight's Helm. Bringing the Old Knight's Shield to Ser Manuel after his boss fight is the first step in the secret quest to defeat Blockner.

Exit the Gungeon XTG

The Halls of Knowledge consists of a single, tall room with many platforms littered about at odd angles. Whereas in Enter the Gungeon, Ser Manuel led the player through many different rooms to teach them about different mechanics, instead Ser Manuel alters the layout and contents of this single room depending on what lesson is currently being taught.

The player is able to use the various platforms in this room to ascending dodge roll to the very top, where they can obtain the Flying Disc. Returning the Flying Disc to Ser Manuel unlocks the item.

Upon completing the tutorial, Ser Manuel will retire to the Underbreach and leave an enemy spawner machine for the player to test their dodging, movement, and combat skills against real Gundead. Additionally, if the player is using touchscreen controls, Ser Manuel will also leave behind a control swapper machine to facilitate easy switching between the bullet time and swipe dodge control schemes.

Enter the Gungeon
Despite the Halls of Knowledge having 100% enemy health scaling, certain enemies in this chamber have their health automatically clamped to a lower value. In particular, Bullet Kin and Bandana Bullet Kin have their health set to 10, while Red Shotgun Kin have their health set to 15.
The lone Pinhead that appears in this chamber is unaffected, and has normal health.

Icon Name Description
Bullet Kin.png Bullet Kin Slowly walks towards the player, firing bullets.
Bandana Bullet Kin.png Bandana Bullet Kin Slowly walks towards the player, rapidly firing bullets.
Red Shotgun Kin.png Red Shotgun Kin Slowly walks towards the player, occasionally firing a tight spread of 5 bullets. Has a chance to fire 6 bullets in all directions upon death.
Pinhead.png Pinhead Walks towards the player and explodes upon death. IF the player gets too close, it will leap towards the player and explode.

Notes

  • ETG If the player dies in the Hall of Knowledge, they will be revived in the previous room with max ammo and full health.
  • XTG It is impossible to die in the Halls of Knowledge, as if the player takes damage they will immediately heal after a second. Taking more damage before being healed does not remove any health.
    • Ser Manuel claims that this is due to the Halls of Knowledge not using live ammunition.
  • In Enter the Gungeon, The Robot, The Cultist, The Bullet, The Paradox and The Gunslinger cannot access the Hall of Knowledge, as the door will be boarded up in the Breach. In Exit the Gungeon, the Bullet and Robot can participate in the tutorial as normal, but Ser Manuel will still refuse to tutorialise the Cultist.
  • Refusing to kill the first Bulletkin by firing all 1000 rounds of the Pea Shooter into a wall takes several minutes and forces the player to kill it with rolls. There's unfortunately no secret dialogue for doing this.
    • It does, however, turn on Auto-Aim after defeating the Bulletkin.
  • ETG It is possible to skip the room where Ser Manuel teaches you how to use blanks without using a blank by doing a dodge roll at the far right side, navigating through the small line, and doing a diagonally right dodge roll.
    • Doing this has no secret dialogue and will continue the chamber normally.
  • TablesETG in the Halls of Knowledge take no damage from the player sliding over them.
  • ETG While the Halls of Knowledge is displayed as 'Chamber 0' upon entry, opening the map will display it as 'Chamber ?'
  • ETG FixedBug.png Fixed Bug Prior to version V1.0.8 chests in the Halls of Knowledge could be Glitched Chests.
