Hearts and Half Hearts are important pickups in Enter the Gungeon and Exit the Gungeon. Hearts also play a minor role in Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead.

Effect

When collected, hearts fill the players heart containers, allowing them to recover from taking damage. This makes hearts possibly the most important pickup for new players, and an integrally important pickup throughout the entirety of each game in which they appear. There are two different kinds of hearts, regular and half. Regular (often called full) hearts restore two points of health, the equivalent of a heart container, while half hearts restore only one.

If the player has full health, they can interact with health pickups to save them for later. This health may then be picked up from health dispensers in the Shop and exit elevator room of the chamber. Health stored in dispensers does not carry over between floors. A miniature image of the heart dispenser will appear in the bottom left corner of the map screen, with a number showing how many half-hearts are currently stored.

  • In the Forge, since there is not an exit elevator room or conventional shop, the heart dispenser will appear in the entrance elevator room.
  • In Bullet Hell, the heart dispenser will appear in the entrance room of the floor.
  • Hearts cannot be saved for later in the R&G Dept.

Other Appearances

  • A pin set including a heart pin was, for a time, sold on the Devolver Digital Merch Store.
  • Multiple heart pickups appear in the animated launch trailer for Enter the Gungeon.

Unused and Cut Content

  • In Pre-Alpha versions of Enter the Gungeon, hearts had a different appearance and did not resemble bullets. This matched the appearance of the health bar a the time.[1]
    • Half-Hearts similarly bore a different appearance, looking like full hearts but significantly smaller.[2] This version of the pickup was called Small Heart.[3]

Notes

  • The Robot has no use for heart pickups, as it cannot ever have heart containers to fill.
  • If the player is missing a single half heart of health, and picks up a full heart, the extra un-needed half heart worth of healing will be wasted.
  • Heart pickups within the Gungeon appear to be two bullets, positioned one in front of the other to resemble a heart.
  • Hearts can sometimes be obtained from brown chests in Enter the Gungeon and Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead.
