Lead Developer

As a one-man team, Singlecore Games consists entirely of South Korean game developer Jaewon Yoo. Since an early age, Yoo had an interest in making games that led him to work at a video game development company, where his skills, passion, and work ethic quickly had him promoted to a managerial role. However, this role was stifling for Yoo's creativity, leading him to leave the company a day before his 30th birthday to pursue independent game development.[1]

His first major success, the 2015 tower defense game Dungeon Warfare still sits at an overwhelmingly positive rating on Steam.[2]

To The Hell

In early 2017, Jaewon was developing another indie title under the name To the Hell, an arcade style bullet hell set on a moving elevator, rocketing up through waves of enemies. However, after being rejected from showcasing the project at game development expos like BitSummit and the Tokyo Game Show, Jaewon became disheartened.[1]

After making the decision to kill the project, Jaewon held a mock funeral for the game at indie game event Seoul Indies,[1] however this state of 'death' for the project would not last. After a publishing deal with an unnamed Chinese publisher fell through in January of 2018,[3] Jaewon recieved an offer from either Dodge Roll or Devolver Digital to continue work on To The Hell as a spin off game of Enter the Gungeon. While Jaewon had wanted to see To The Hell through as a solo project, he was drawn to the stability to having other people to work with- and the possibilities in using the Gungeon IP.[4]

During the development period of Exit the Gungeon, Jaewon was held to secrecy by an NDA, an arrangement unusual to him which caused him anxiety at being unable to publicly speak about his work or receive feedback.[5]

The main reason was that the game was supposed to be finished by the beginning of the year, but health problems made it difficult to release it as planned. Considering the current state of China, even if we had finished the game, it would have been very difficult to release it. Even though we didn't sign a contract, we still keep in touch with them very occasionally because they are good friends." - Jaewon Yoo in a Twitter Post

(Rough Translation) "February: I was approached about making To the Hell as a spin-off of the [NDA] game, published by [NDA] and developed by [NDA], and I agreed to do it. I had been doing the graphics and game design on my own, so I wanted to see it through to the end, but I was drawn to the stability of having someone to work with and the possibility of utilizing the rich content of the original game." - Jaewon Yoo in a Twitter Post
  5. "어떤 게임과 합작하게 됐는지 연내에는 공개 할 수 있을 줄 알았는데 서로 하던 작업이 길어져서 시작이 좀 미뤄지다보니 내년 중순 쯤은 되어야 알릴 수 있을 듯. 평소 하던대로 개발 중 gif 같은거 올리고 싶은데 못하고 있어서 근질근질하다." (Rough Translation) "I thought I'd be able to reveal which game we're collaborating on by the end of the year, but we've been working on it for a while, so it's been delayed, so it won't be until the middle of next year. I'd like to post gifs of the development process as usual, but I can't, so I'm getting frustrated." - Jaewon Yoo in a Twitter Post

To The Hell miraculously came back to life, but they say it has changed its form and is now living in hiding." (Image Attached) - Jaewon Yoo in a Twitter Post
