Disambigsprite.png This article is about the characters role as a Gungeoneer and NPC. For the characters role as a companion item, see Super Space Turtle.

Super Space Turtle, is a Gungeoneer exclusive to Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead, where he serves as one of two playable characters alongside The Detective. Due to the arcade nature of House of the Gundead, Super Space Turtle does not play any differently to The Detective, and has no unlocks or character specific content. Super Space Turtle also fulfills a minor NPC role in Exit the Gungeon, and appears as a companion item in Enter the Gungeon and Exit the Gungeon.

Story

Super Space Turtle is a famous hero and bounty hunter from beyond the stars. Living by his own code, he both entered and managed to exit The Gungeon during his career. With an impressive list of accomplishments, not least of which the slaying of the fearsome Gloctopus, he is assigned by Commander Iron to team up with the Detective to delve into the Gungeon once again and rescue the President from his blobulonian captors.

Other Appearances

  • Super Space Turtle appears as an NPC in Exit the Gungeon, in numerous locations;

    • The Gungeon Proper elevator on the Pilots route, and the Forge elevator on the Robots route both consist of an empty elevator shaft, with the player being carried on a rope by Super Space Turtle, who is using a jetpack.
    • He will appear at the Exterior area of The Gungeon, in the Sword awaiting liftoff with the rest of the Gungeoneers. Additionally, if the player has purchased the Bait Worm.png Bait Worm, he will appear on the left side of the exterior on a jet ski. Approaching Super Space Turtle's jet ski will have him ferry the player to the final showdown against the Gloctopus.
    • Super Space Turtle will continue to drive his jet ski throughout the entirety of the Gloctopus' first phase.
  • Super Space Turtle is featured prominently on the side art for the Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead arcade cabinet illustrated by Max Grecke, given that he is a main character.

  • On 11/09/2016, Dodge Roll posted a fake Atari-era styled box-art for a Super Space Turtle standalone game, which they stated was totally (not) coming soon. The version of Super Space Turtle shown on this box-art embraces a far more realistic and gritty style than his ingame counterpart.[1]
    • The studio name on this fake box-art was The Brave Companions, a prototype name for the development team before they settled on the name Dodge Roll.

Unused and Cut Content

A screenshot of what is supposedly the oldest functional version of Enter the Gungeon, with what appears to be a proto-SST.[2]
  • According to Dodge Roll programmer David Rubel, the very first unity project created by the team was titled Super Space Turtle, and was a side-scrolling runner starring the titular character.[3] While this project was never released, the Super Space Turtle character endures throughout the Gungeonverse as a reference to the original project.[4]
  • On 11/05/2017, Dodge Roll lead designer Dave Crooks posted a screenshot with the caption "Behold what is believed to be the oldest functional copy of Gungeon".[2] This screenshot shows a barebones grey area with a single torch, and a green character in a space helmet that closely resembles Super Space Turtle. What purpose this Super Space Turtle lookalike served is unknown, although some have speculated that it may be the player character in the scene.

Notes

  • Super Space Turtle appears mostly mute in both Enter the Gungeon and Exit the Gungeon, while in Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead he speaks in clear sentences.
