A screenshot of what is supposedly the oldest functional version of Enter the Gungeon[1]
"that said, we have a LOT of half-finished guns and items. that's just how it goes--we have a lot of ideas, and only some of them get finished" - Brent Sodman[2]

Miscellaneous

  • On 11/05/2017, Dodge Roll lead designer Dave Crooks posted a screenshot with the caption "Behold what is believed to be the oldest functional copy of Gungeon".[1] This screenshot shows a barebones grey area with a single torch, and a green character in a space helmet that closely resembles Super Space Turtle. The function of any of the elements shown in this screenshot are unknown.
  • Gungeon was initially planned to make use of the shmup bullet pattern scripting language BulletML (Bullet Markup Language), however BulletML proved to be inadequate for the complex and dynamic bullet patterns the team wanted to create.[3]
  • Pre-Alpha versions of Enter the Gungeon included a cap on the number of guns the player could hold, tracked by the AdditionalGunCapacity stat. The default gun cap was 2, and could be increased by certain items such as the Utility Belt.png Utility Belt.
    • This cap was officially removed on 14/08/2015, with Dodge Roll making an announcement post showing The Pilot holding a large number of guns.[4]
  • In very early stages of Enter the Gungeons development, guns would automatically reload upon reaching the end of a magazine, instead of requiring player input. This was removed in favour of the moment of tension created by needing to manually reload.[5]
  • During early stages of Enter the Gungeons development, every gun in the game natively had an active reload mechanic to reward skilled players. This was eventually removed and turned into the item effect of the Cog of Battle.png Cog of Battle to make the game easier on new and learning players.[6]

Mentioned Features

This section refers to scrapped features and content that have only ever been mentioned by Dodge Roll, with extremely little other information.

Enter the Gungeon

Guns

  • Dave Crooks has mentioned a Rocket Propelled Chainsaw Launcher briefly on Twitter.
    • Crooks favourited a tweet from user @ScarletteMeloni requesting the addition of a Rocket Propelled Chainsaw into Enter the Gungeon.[7]
    • Following this favourite, @ScarletteMeloni asked Crooks if this was confirmation of plans to add the Rocket Propelled Chainsaw. Crooks replied, stating that the concept of a Rocket Propelled Chainsaw Launcher was more likely to be implemented than a Rocket Powered Chainsaw on its own. This tweet, however, does not imply any intention to add the launcher.[8]
    • The Rocket Propelled Chainsaw is an internet meme originating in 2005, which became popular for the absurdity of the concept. It is notable for being among the first meme images to ever be featured on the website iFunny.[9]
  • A weapon called Gunchucks (a portmanteau of gun and nunchucks) was apparently drawn up on 'day 1' of Enter the Gungeons development, but was never implemented due to Dodge Roll not figuring out a good way to go about creating the item.[10]

Items

  • Dave Crooks has mentioned in early interviews that a small number of items and scenarios exclusive to co-op mode would be included in the final release of Enter the Gungeon. However, with the exception of Friendship Cookie.png Friendship Cookie, no items are exclusive to co-op.[11]
  • On 28/06/2017, Reddit user u/Landpaddle posted five item suggestions to r/EnterTheGungeon. These suggestions included an item that inverted the damage reduction on enemy piercing, an item that increased damage and coolness for performing with perfect aim, a range increase, an item that turned enemies to stone, and an item that spent health to give Armor.png Armor and stats. Brent Sodman responded to these suggestions, saying that the concept of one of the suggestions was already being worked on,[12] however no item resembling any of these suggestions would wind up in Enter the Gungeon.
  • According to Brent Sodman, an item referencing the game Ikaruga has been designed for ETG, but was not added due to the difficulty of its implementation.[13] The specifics of how this item would have functioned are unknown. Many features of Enter the Gungeon, including the dodge roll, are already inspired by Ikaruga.

Enemies

  • Dave Crooks has, on multiple occasions, mentioned the concept of Table Mimics.
    • Crooks has humorously referred to Table Mimics in a Twitter post. While it may have been a joke, he also directly mentions the unused Shopkeeper Mimic as a mimic he supposedly wants to implement- which is known and confirmed as an actual scrapped enemy.[14]
    • In response to a Reddit post asking if Dodge Roll can add Table Mimics to Enter the Gungeon, Crooks replied "Yes".[15]
  • Dave Crooks has spoken on Reddit about adding Glitched Chest Mimics to Enter the Gungeon in an official form, however this never came to fruition.[16]

Other

  • Daily Seeds (specific runs with deterministic generation, where every player playing the 'daily run' on a specific day gets the same floor generation and loot drops) have been repeatedly mentioned by members of Dodge Roll as a planned feature for Enter the Gungeon. It was eventually abandoned, however.
    • Brent Sodman stated he was working on deterministic RNG for daily runs on 08/07/2017.[17]
  • During development, Dave Crooks mentioned the possibility of naming something in Enter the Gungeon after game tester Lekonish.[18]
  • Dave Crooks has mentioned the possibility of an interaction between Mimic Tooth Necklace.png Mimic Tooth Necklace and Synergy Chests- but only as a possible avenue for future development, and not a solid plan.[19]
  • Brent Sodman stated on 05/10/2017 plans to add a reference to the game Ruiner.[20]
  • Brent Sodman has semi-seriously expressed regret at not calling Sunglasses.png Sunglasses "Gunglasses".[21]
  • In response to a fan request for an 'Endless Mode' of Enter the Gungeon, Brent Sodman replied; "we've definitely got ideas for additional "modes" in the expansion. can't promise endless mode will be one, but consider yourself heard :)"[22]
  • Brent Sodman has stated that he wanted to include the word Gundam in Enter the Gungeon, due to including the word gun, and being a reference to the Gundam franchise. However, Gundam is a registered trademark, preventing its inclusion.[23]
  • According to Dave Crooks, he regrets not including any references to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in A Farewell To Arms.[24]
  • Dave Crooks has agreed with Reddit suggestions that the Lower Case r.png Lower Case r should change the pitch and speed of Doseones voice acting depending on the players Rate of Fire.[25] However, this was never implemented.
  • On 05/03/2018, Reddit user u/Draoth posted a gameplay concept for a 'battle royale' mode of Enter the Gungeon, where a large number of players would be dropped into a large floor and fight their way towards the center, collecting loot and fighting other players to the death. While u/Draoth is unaffiliated with Dodge Roll, Dave Crooks replied to this post saying that the team had been considering something "very similar" to u/Draoths idea. The specifics of the concept are unknown, though Crooks pointed out it was unlikely to come to fruition due to the time and work investment involved in importing functional networking code into Enter the Gungeon, and doing the concept justice.[26]
  • According to a Reddit Post by Dave Crooks, both a way to obtain high quality loot in Bullet Hell, and a higher number of 'variant' enemies were being considered by the Dodge Roll for the AG&D Update. Evidently however, these ideas were scrapped.[27]
  • Brent Sodman has expressed enthusiasm for the idea of implementing "romance quest", to assist Trorc in forming a relationship with the Ledge Goblin.[28]

House of the Gundead

Dodge Roll have repeatedly mentioned the idea of a large paid DLC expansion for Enter the Gungeon.[30] While this was at one point a definitive plan for the future of Enter the Gungeon,[31] it was eventually shelved in favour of the free Farewell to Arms Update. The main reason for this scaling back of the update was the growing technical complexity of Enter the Gungeon and the rocky code foundations of the game.[32]

  • In 2017, David Rubel speculated that the paid DLC would be a 2018 release-[33] an optimistic target that even the scaled-back Farewell To Arms update did not hit.
  • Dodge Roll members have briefly mentioned a gun based on a shrimp as part of the plan for the paid DLC.[34] Other developer comments have mentioned a gun based on the real world Pistol Shrimp as part of Dodge Roll's large list of ideas,[35] likely being one and the same as the shrimp gun intended for the DLC.

Joke Features

Dual wielding being implemented into ETG via Devolver Digital proprietary Comment Created Content

This section refers to features and content that Dodge Roll developers have joked about putting into the game, but were unlikely to have ever been serious.

  • During Devolver Digitals E3 2017 Presentation, the company presents a number of fictitious and comical burgeoning technologies. This included 'Comment Created Content', which supposedly trawled forums and comment sections for petty user complaints and requests and automatically implemented them into existing games. The game used to demonstrate this fictional technology is Enter the Gungeon, with a commenter on a forum begging for dual wielding, and the feature appearing in the game.
    • This may have been a subtle teaser for the dual wielding Synergies that would eventually be included in AG&D, and almost definitely used some of that code for the demo gameplay clip.
    • Despite this, the dual wielding shown in the clip is not a synergy, has a unique equip animation, and uses two guns (AK-47.png AK-47 and Hegemony Carbine.png Hegemony Carbine) which are not dual wielded together in the actual game.
  • The Devolver Digital mascot 'Volvy' was first showcased on 08/06/2023 in The Return of Volvy Devolver Direct presentation. As part of the gag was pretending that Volvy had existed all along, a montage of various Devolver Digital published games is shown with Volvy inserted into them to evidence his supposed legacy, including a brief clip of a Volvy Companion in Enter the Gungeon.[36]
    • This Volvy companion appears to hold the Magnum.png Magnum.
  • A Companion based on Devolver Digital mascot 'Volvy' is shown in a montage of games that Volvey is claimed to have appeared in
  • Brent Sodman has joked about putting Twitter user @wtfmig into Enter the Gungeon, in response to a post of @wtfmig showing his muscular arms (guns).[37]
  • In response to a Twitter thread theorising what a cat brought into the Gungeon would be called, Dave Crooks put forward the name Nyan-millimeter.[38]
  • In a Twitter thread regarding possible mimics, Dave Crooks elaborated on a joke made by user @nsuttner about turning the Options Menu of Enter the Gungeon into a mimic, saying "there must be some way... to weaponize the options menu.".[39] Further down in the thread, he follows with the joke "every wrong press disconnects your controller and has @doseone scream "Ya fucked up!" at you".[40]
  • Brent Sodman has joked about a plan to replace chests in Enter the Gungeon with 'Shoot Boxes', that each cost $0.99. [41]
  • In response to Steamboat Willie entering the public domain, Dodge Roll posted on twitter jokingly claiming that players could watch Steamboat Willie in Enter the Gungeon, coupled with a fake gif of Steamboat Willie playing on the hologram table in The Breach.[42]
  • In response to twitter user @JonCarnage asking if Enter the Gungeon contained a gun that shoots nothing, Dodge Roll games humorously replied "The emperor's new gun".[43] This is in reference to the folk tale The Emperor's New Clothes, wherein a vain emperor is tricked into believing he is wearing opulent robes- when in fact he is wearing nothing.
  • Dave Crooks has made jokes about Enter the Gungeon getting "6 [games], and a movie".[44] This is a reference to the meme "six seasons and a movie", originating in the television show Community. In response to people replying, seriously asking for a movie, Dave said to "tell netflix"[45] if they really want an Enter the Gungeon movie.
  • Dave Crooks has joked that, if Enter the Gungeon were to ever get an endless loop mode similar to the 'victory laps' in The Binding of Isaac, future loops would be made more difficult by forcing the user to play with a controller covered in bees.[46]
  • Dave Crooks has joked on Reddit about implementing 'Double jammed purple friendship glitch mimics' to Enter the Gungeon.[47]
  • Brent Sodman has jokingly shown support for the concept of a Synergrace Mimic.[48]
