Enter the Gungeon is a game developed by Dodge Roll Games and published by Devolver Digital. It was released on PS4, PC, Mac, and Linux on April 5, 2016. It was also released on Xbox One on April 5, 2017 and on Nintendo Switch on December 18, 2017. It marks the first proper entry in the Gungeonverse.
Gameplay
Enter the Gungeon is a gunfight dungeon crawler following a band of misfits seeking to shoot, loot, dodge roll and table-flip their way to personal absolution by reaching the legendary Gungeon’s ultimate treasure: the gun that can kill the past. Select a hero and battle your way to the bottom of the Gungeon by surviving a challenging and evolving series of floors filled with the dangerously adorable Gundead and fearsome Gungeon bosses armed to the teeth. Gather precious loot, discover hidden secrets, and chat with opportunistic merchants and shopkeepers to purchase powerful items to gain an edge and kill your past.
History

According to Dodge Roll lead designer Dave Crooks, the name Enter the Gungeon was the first thing created for the game, with the rest of the game slowly formed around that single core pun.[2]
After working with the team to develop a functional prototype, Dave Crooks traveled to an E3 event with a copy of Enter the Gungeon on a laptop, showing up uninvited to a Devolver Digital booth and asking them to look over the game. This long-shot worked out, with Devolver picking up the game and supporting its development, including continuing to fund its development after Dodge Roll's savings ran out.[3]
Enter the Gungeon was first announced at PlayStation Experience 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.[4][5]
Over the years since its release, the game has received 3 major updates introducing new characters, floors, game modes, enemies, guns, and synergies for guns/items. The game's spin-off Exit the Gungeon was released for the Apple Arcade in 2019, and released for PC and Switch in 2020.

Notes
- According to Dave Crooks, lead designer at Dodge Roll games, Enter the Gungeon was initially inspired by the song Intro from the OST of the game Gun Godz.[17] In this song Yung Venuz (voiced by Doseone) raps about a variety of bizarre and varied guns.
- Dodge Roll would go onto hire Doseone to create the Enter the Gungeon soundtrack.
- The gameplay of Enter the Gungeon draws inspiration from The Binding of Isaac, Spelunky, Metal Gear Solid, Dark Souls, and Wasteland Kings (The original prototype of Nuclear Throne).[18]
- The pixel art style of Enter the Gungeon was largely a practical choice, according to Dave Crooks, rather than an intentional attempt to appear 'retro'.[19]
- The story of Enter the Gungeon is directly inspired by the novel Hyperion by Dan Simmons.[18][20] The 1989 science fiction novel focuses on a group of pilgrims, each given a title based on their occupation, traveling to the planet Hyperion. Hyperion is the location of the 'Time Tombs', ancient structures which travel backwards through time instead of forwards. The Hegemony of Man takes its name directly from a faction in the novel.
- In May of 2019 a physical version of Enter the Gungeon for the Nintendo Switch would release through Nighthawk Interactive. This version of the game came with an exclusive sticker sheet, a code for the Enter the Gungeon Soundtrack, an exclusive Shell skin for The Bullet, and an exclusive Bullet Kin papercraft.
- Enter the Gungeon was supposedly developed with a framed boxed copy of Super Meat Boy hanging on the wall above the desks.[21]
- The Polish and Russian localisations of Enter the Gungeon were handled by the company Roboto Global.[22]
