The Gun That Can Kill The Past (often shortened to The Gun) is a gun that serves as a major story element in Enter the Gungeon. When fired upon a target, the gun injures time itself, allowing the target to travel back and alter past events- "killing the past". The abilities of the Gun are limited by its access to ammunition. Without the aid of the Bullet That Can Kill The Past, the gun is only able to send a target back a matter of minutes or hours.
Function
- The Gun can be found in a special ornate chest (known as the Cache of the Ammulich) in the Aimless Void, once the Dragun has been slain.
- Using the Gun without the Bullet will send the player back in time to The Breach, marking an end to their run. This is the only ending aside from dying available to players in the early game.
- Once the Bullet That Can Kill The Past has been forged by the Blacksmith, she will give the player a bullet on every run. Using the Gun with the Bullet will send them back in time to The Past, however many years ago that may be. Pasts are small levels with individual bosses unique to each player character.
- While aiming The Gun, the players crosshair will be replaced by an ornate golden reticle resembling a clock, complete with hands marking the time. This icon is referred to internally as the Clockhair, and can be presumed to be the intended aiming device of the gun.
- If the player dies at any point during a run, the clockhair will enter from off screen, take aim at them, and fire. If the clockhair is an indicator that the Gun is being used, then this serves as an in-universe explanation for how The Gungeoneers are able to return after many deaths within the Gungeon, as their deaths are being retroactively undone through time.
- When the Lich is defeated, the player will gain the ability to aim the clockhair once more (although the Gun itself does not appear). Targeting the Lich with the clockhair and firing will fracture time like normal, presumably sending both the Lich and the player backwards through time, and finishing the fight.
Lore
Little is known about the exact function of the Gun, only that it was the project that the Gungeon Master was working on when the Great Bullet struck.[1] Whether or not these events are causally related is unknown, although the Great Bullet was in some way integral to the Guns completion.[2] Survivors of the Bullet, and pilgrims who traveled to the destroyed fortress would seek to rebuild it, and in their doing discover The Gun.[3] Those who managed to leave early, while the Planar Lead was abundant, carried stories with them to the galaxy of a relic capable of altering time itself.[4]
Those who heard the legend began to the travel to what would become The Gungeon, and in time these regretful "past killers" would come to form the majority of Gungeoneers- willing to risk everything just to use the Gun for another shot.[3]
Meanwhile, the Cult of the Gundead grew in power, eventually claiming the Gungeons chambers for themselves- and the Gun at the heart of it. Dogmatic in their worship of the Gun, they seek to stop all who would use its incomprehensible firepower.[5] The exact reason for this worship of the Gun is unknown, though it is fervent enough to fuel internal religious sects within even the Cult of the Gundead.
Other Appearances
- The Gun That Can Kill The Past appears in the Enter The Gungeon: Yesterday Strikes T-Shirt, sold on the official Devolver Digital merchandise store. The shirt depicts a Bullet Kin face on the front, and The Gun on the back with the slogan "The Bullet of Life Strikes Yesterday", and the years 2014-2019 (A timeline of Enter the Gungeons development).
- The Gun That Can Kill The Past is shown among other guns on an official Enter the Gungeon tote bag, illustrated by Joseph Harmon.[6]
- The same illustration of The Gun used for the tote bag appears on disc 1 of the 2022 special edition vinyl release of the Enter the Gungeon soundtrack.
- The song ENTER THE GUNGEON on the Enter the Gungeon soundtrack includes the line "Ammo willing, PastKilling gun shall shoot." in reference to The Gun.[7]
In Other Media
- The Gun That Can Kill The Past appears as a 'Warp Zone' card in The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls, where it has the one-use ability to cancel all not-yet-resolved effects and grant the user an additional turn- destroying itself in the process.
Unused and Cut Content
- During the development of Enter the Gungeon, the Gun That Can Kill The Past was represented by a purple version of the
Dragunfire, secreted within a regular Red Chest and surrounded on all sides by worshipping Gun Cultists. This version of the Gun and its chamber were used in early marketing materials and trailers for the game.
- Although this version of The Gun and its chamber were eventually remade, they were referenced in the Farewell To Arms Update with the
High Dragunfire and its cultist custodians. These cultists erroneously believe the High Dragunfire to be The Gun, in reference to this early design.
- Although this version of The Gun and its chamber were eventually remade, they were referenced in the Farewell To Arms Update with the
- Pre-Alpha versions of Enter the Gungeon featured a slightly different design of the Clockhair, with a purple inner rim. As the Gun was not accessible to testers in these versions, this clockhair was only visible after dying.[8]
Notes
- The sound effect for the Gun That Can Kill The Past when it is fully charged up is the same sound effect as the Dueling Laser.
- The
Blooper is an imperfect copy of the Gun That Can Kill The Past.[9]
