Effects

Synergies ETG

  • Synergy.png Buggin' Out - If the player has Gungeon Ant, while it is held, Bug Boots spread oil instead of poison, and the player becomes immune to fire.

Item Interactions

  • Sponge.png Sponge - Poison left by the Bug Boots is immediately soaked up by the Sponge, completely negating the boots effect.
  • Gungine.png Gungine / Plunger.png Plunger - Since these guns restore ammo when reloading while standing on Goop, Bug Boots can be used to generate infinite ammo for these weapons.

Secret of the Ooze in Professor Gooptons shop[1]
  • Bug Boots' text is designated as SECRETOFTHEOOZE in the text string database of Enter the Gungeon.
    • An item called Secret of the Ooze can be seen in pre-release gameplay footage of Enter the Gungeon, being sold in Professor Gooptons shop. This item uses a sprite that appears to be a green canister.[1] Based on its name matching the string key for Bug Boots, this item may be an early iteration of Bug Boots.
    • This canister sprite is still present in the assets of Enter the Gungeon, with the name ooze_001.
    • In this same version, Monster Blood also bore the name Secret of the Ooze, although this may have been in error.
    • "Secret of the Ooze" is a reference to the 1991 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. In the film a canister of green fluid, dubbed 'The Ooze', contains a powerful mutagenic agent which serves as a major plot device.
    • According to twitter posts from Dodge Roll programmer Brent Sodman, a broken item included at a build of Enter the Gungeon shown at PAX East 2015[2] was 'turned into' Bug Boots. This broken item may have been Secret of the Ooze.[3][4]
      • The other user in the thread claimed that the 'broken item' caused poison to permanently appear below the player when rolling.[5]
  • The sprites for Bug Boots are labelled spider_climb_boots. This suggests that Bug Boots may at one point have been intended as a reference to the Spider Climb spell in Dungeons & Dragons. Spider Climb is a spell that allows the target to move up vertical walls and across ceilings without effort, like a spider.

Notes

  • Use of this item allows the player to spread poison over the entrance to Bullet Hell, despite there visually being no ground to spread it on.
