Grants a second chance upon death.
A piece of a legendary Gungeoneer's soul. Though they may have failed in their quest, an encouraging aura emanates from the spirit. |
Gun Soul is a passive item that appears in Enter the Gungeon.
Effects
- Adds a heart container.
- Upon death, the player respawns at the start of the current floor with one heart container (or 2
as The Robot), retaining all of their items and guns. The floor layout will remain the same, but all enemies previously killed will respawn. If the player reaches the location where they died and interacts with their soul, they will return to normal.
- All removed heart containers will be returned upon the player reclaiming their soul, however they will be empty.
- Gun Soul is removed from the players inventory when they perish, and is returned when they reclaim their soul.
- Since the Gun Soul is no longer in the players inventory on the trek back to their soul, it will not protect them. Dying in this state will end the run.
Co-op
- In co-op mode, Gun Soul will only activate normally if the player with the Gun Soul is the only living player. If there is another player alive, instead of resetting the current chamber and respawning the dead player, they will become a ghost.
- These players will need to be resurrected by opening a chest, killing a boss, or using
Friendship Cookie like normal.
- Unlike normal, players who die in co-op with Gun Soul while their co-op partner is alive will not drop any of their items or guns on the ground, and will still be holding all of their guns when resurrected.
- Players who die in this way and are resurrected will still be under the effects of the Gun Soul, and must reclaim their soul to get the item back. However, they will resurrect with full unrestricted heart containers, and will not be restricted from gaining more.
Bug Players who die this way will lose all their passive items. They will not drop on the ground, but will not be in the players inventory when they resurrect. They are not regained upon the player reclaiming their soul (with the exception of Gun Soul itself), and are effectively erased. For this reason Gun Soul may be a detrimental item in co-op mode for players who tend to die before their partner.
- These players will need to be resurrected by opening a chest, killing a boss, or using
Synergies ETG
Crestfallen Soul - If the player also has Crestfaller, dodge roll speed is increased by 20% and Crestfaller deals 50% more damage if the player dies and has not yet retrieved their soul.
Praise the Gun - If the player has Old Knight's Flask, entering the Shop, exit elevator room, or Old Crest room will summon a bonfire. If the player dies, they will respawn at the last bonfire they activated instead of at the start of the floor. Additionally, dodge roll recovery time is reduced.
- Bonfires will not appear in The Blacksmiths shop, however one will appear in the corridor after the High Draguns bossroom, leading to the Aimless Void.
- Bonfires will not appear in the R&G Dept. or Resourceful Rat's Lair.
\o/ - If the player also has Sunlight Javelin, when Sunlight Javelin kills an enemy, it will spawn a circular zone that ignites all enemies within it.
Item Interactions
Pig - If both Pig and Gun Soul are held when the player takes fatal damage, the Pig will always trigger first. If the players life is saved by the Pig, Gun Soul will not trigger.
Ser Junkan - If Ser Junkan is in his Holy Knight form, Gun Soul will trigger before Junkan's sacrifice when fatal damage is taken. If the player takes fatal damage while in spirit form, Ser Junkan (provided he is in Holy Knight form) will still save them.
Clone - Gun Soul will trigger before Clone when fatal damage is taken, and will prevent Clone from triggering.
Cigarettes - Allows the player to farm potentially infinite coolness by smoking to death and then resurrecting in the entrance room of a chamber.
Drill - If the player dies in the mini-arena generated by the Drill, they will not be able to re-access the area to regain their soul. The chest that they initially used the Drill on to enter the mini-arena will be missing.
Unused and Cut Content
- Prior to the Supply Drop Update, the player would lose all of their guns and items upon respawning, and Gun Soul was an
item.
- In Pre-Alpha versions of Enter the Gungeon, the Gun Soul was unlocked from the beginning of the game, and bore a different appearance.[1] This sprite still exists in the assets of Enter the Gungeon, under the name
demons_souls
.- It is unknown what this iteration of the item did beyond giving a single heart container, as it did not save the player from death.[2]
- A second unused appearance of Gun Soul also persists in the assets of Enter the Gungeon. This version of the item's appearance is animated, although the first frame is missing- overwritten by the current sprite for the item.
Notes
- There is no limit to the number of times that the player can resurrect themselves with Gun Soul, provided they are able to return to their soul and reclaim it without perishing.
Bug Using the Cryo Button to save and quit a run while in this spirit form will cause the player to be returned to normal upon re-entering the run. They will, however, have forfeited Gun Soul by leaving it behind.
- During Gun Souls effect, the player is reduced to one heart container and cannot gain more. This restriction, along with the "soul" cosmetic effect, is removed when the player reclaims their soul or uses the Cryo Button to save, quit, and resume the run.
- Enemies that are re-spawned in previously cleared rooms will not drop
.
- This item's effect is a direct reference to the retrieval mechanic from Dark Souls, which allows players to reclaim their souls (the experience points and currency of Dark Souls) lost after dying by reaching their place of death once again without dying again.
- The Ammonomicon quote "YOU DEFEATED" is a reference to a mistranslation in the original Dark Souls, wherein after defeating a boss, the game displayed this text in bold letters across the screen. It was later patched to "VICTORY ACHIEVED."
Praise the Gun is a reference to Solaire of Astora from Dark Souls and his well-known catchphrase, "Praise the Sun!"
Crestfallen Soul is a reference to the Crestfallen Warrior from Dark Souls.
\o/ is a reference to the 'Praise the Sun' gesture that Solaire of Astora performs in Dark Souls.
