The Cosmonaut

The Cosmonaut is an unused Gungeoneer in Enter the Gungeon. Despite not being avaliable in game, it is possible to change the player character to the Cosmonaut using mods.

The Cosmonaut begins with the Makarov, and is still referenced in its Ammonomicon description. A poster of the Cosmonaut is visible in the Underbreach in Exit the Gungeon.

Story

The Cosmonaut was never given a complete story. In the item description for the Makarov, it states that "The Makarov was brought to the Gungeon by a lost Cosmonaut. Some say that the brave, lost soul still wanders the Gungeon".

Past Kill

If the Bullet That Can Kill The Past is used on The Cosmonaut, it will send the character to the credits instead of a unique past.

Strategy

The Cosmonaut plays very differently from most of the other Gungeoneers due to starting solely with the Makarov. The lack of starting equipment makes rushing chests in order to get replacement gear essential. Unlike other starter weapons, the Makarov does not have infinite ammo, and must be refilled with ammo drops.

If the Makarov is lost, and the player has no guns, entering a new room will call down a supply drop containing a replacement weapon.

Other Appearances

Cosmonaut Bosscard Trailer Fuzzy.png
  • A previously never-before-seen bosscard for the Cosmonaut is briefly shown in the announcement trailer for the Chinese Mobile Version of Enter the Gungeon, released on Devolver Digitals official BiliBili account on the 10th of April 2024. Whether this was in error is unknown, as the Cosmonaut does not appear to be used in the Chinese Mobile Release.
    • This unique bosscard was also shown adjacent to the bosscard of the High Priest, and the similarly unused grey cultist bosscard.
    • The Cosmonaut is depicted here wielding an AK-47, despite that not being a part of their starting loadout. The AK-47 is Russian in origin, however, much like the Makarov.

Notes

  • The Cosmonaut has existed unused in Enter the Gungeon since its initial release, along with the The Ninja.
  • In Enter the Gungeon the Cosmonaut uses a grey-robed variation of The Cultists bosscard which resembles a Gun Cultist. This variation of the image uses a real gun and bullet, instead of the Dart Gun and a dart.
  • The win and death Ammonomicon pages incorrectly call The Cosmonaut The Cultist.
  • The Cosmonaut re-uses the map icon of the Convict. Despite this, a map icon for the Cosmonaut does exist in the assets of Enter the Gungeon, entirely unused.
  • The Cosmonaut does not have an assigned animation for tumbling through space after using the Gun That Can Kill The Past, and as such will default to using a generic falling skeleton animation. This is a property that they share with the Cultist.
  • Cosmonaut as a term refers specifically to astronauts in the employ of the Russian Federal Space Agency or the Soviet space program which preceded it.
    • The real world Pistolet Makarova or Makarov's Gun was allegedly carried by Russian Cosmonauts on space missions in the 1960s and 1970s as part of a standard survival kit, before being replaced by the TP-82 in 1986.
    • The Cosmonauts appearance appears to be loosely based on the SK-1 Spacesuit worn by real world cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space.
  • The Cosmonaut appears to be a walking skeleton, dead inside their suit.
    • This may be a reference to the Lost Cosmonauts or Phantom Cosmonauts conspiracy theory. This theory claims that Soviet Cosmonauts were sent into outer space before the widely reported 'first man in space' Yuri Gagarin, but that these predecessors died in the process. According to the theory, the Soviet Government then expunged all records of these lost pioneers and their ill-fated missions in order to dodge bad publicity in the space race. Any conclusive proof of this conspiracy theory is yet to be uncovered, but despite this the idea of so called lost cosmonauts remains popular in media and science fiction.
    • It may also be a reference to the Vashta Nerada, a species of carnivorous beings from the BBC television show Doctor Who. In the episode Silence in the Library, these microscopic invisible creatures swarm inside a sealed spacesuit, consuming the flesh of the inhabitant and puppeteering their skeleton from the within the suits confines.
    • It may also be a reference to the Spooky Space Kook, a classic monster design resembling a skeletal apparition in a spacesuit from the original run of the animated television show Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!.
  • Upon opening a Chest, the Cosmonaut will salute.

Bugs

As a result of being an unimplemented character, many parts of the Cosmonaut are unfinished and unstable.

  • Bug.png Bug The Cosmonaut does not have animations for moving or idling with both hands visible. As a result, while in the Breach or using a gun that requires no hands such as the Crown of Guns, the Cosmonaut will not animate.
  • Bug.png Bug The Cosmonaut does not have animations for flying, and as a result will not correctly play an idle animation while using the Wax Wings, Jetpack, Cat Bullet King Throne, or Ring of Ethereal Form.
  • Bug.png Bug Because the ability to slide over tables was added after the Cosmonaut was scrapped, the Cosmonaut does not have animations for table sliding. Instead, the Cosmonaut will continue their regular dodge animation as normal.
    • On long table lines, if the cosmonaut finishes their dodge animation before finishing sliding, they will stand up straight for the remainder of the slide.
    • This quirk appears to give the Cosmonaut an unusual amount of momentum when coming off a table slide, slingshotting them slightly forwards. This can make table sliding with the Cosmonaut unpredictable and difficult to control.
