The Breach is the first area of The Gungeon. While usually not considered a chamber in its own right, it does serve as a foyer for the Gungeon below, a refuge for Gungeoneers in-between expeditions into the depths, and a home for many of the unfortunate souls trapped within the Gungeon. The Gundead do not venture into the Breach, and its layout does not shift like most of the Gungeons halls, making it a relatively safe place to while away all the hours in eternity.

The player can select which Gungeoneer to play in the lower left corner of the Breach, as well as purchase items or services from various NPCs in the area.

The Cultist's Past is set within the Breach, although absent of its usual denizens and with all exits boarded closed.

Layout ETG

As mentioned previously, the layout of the Breach does not shift. It consists of a large central atrium separated into two vertical levels, as well as three additional rooms accessed through doorways. The atrium contains several pits, however falling into them does not damage the player.

Upper Level

  • The northmost wall of the main atrium has two doors, the left leading to the Gungeon Acquisitions Department, and the right leading to the Sorceress's Room.
  • The center of the upper level contains a giant bullet, with pictograms engraved upon its primer, and a central entrance leading to the Keep of the Lead Lord. This entrance is the easiest form of access to the hostile chambers of the Gungeon.
  • The entrance to the Keep of the Lead Lord is guarded by two NPCs called the Gunknights, who will bar entry until the player visits Ser Manuel in the Halls of Knowledge, or until the player willingly ignores their sagely advice.
  • Once freed in the Gungeon, the Gunsling King and Manservantes will appear on the left.
  • Once freed in the Gungeon, and purchased from, Professor Goopton will appear on the right, opening a Hegemony Credit.png shop to unlock goop-themed items and guns.
  • Once freed in the Gungeon and assisted in mapping every main chamber, The Lost Adventurer will appear on the central stairs of the atrium, about halfway up.

Lower Level

  • The southmost wall bears the front entrance of the Gungeon, leading to its exterior. Exiting through this door returns the player to the title screen.
  • The lower left corner is where the Gungeoneers reside, and will gradually fill up with their bric-a-brac as the player progresses through the game. Unlockable Gungeoneers will show up here once unlocked. Gungeoneer alt-skins and the Alternate Gun Shrine will also appear here once unlocked.
  • North from the Gungeoneer living area is the entrance to the Halls of Knowledge, the tutorial area and Chamber 0 of the Gungeon. To the left of this door is the Drunkard NPC.
    • The Halls of Knowledge can only be entered by the main four Gungeoneers. For unlockable Gungeoneers, it will be boarded off. Additionally it cannot be entered in co-op.
  • Once Blockner is defeated and Ser Manuel is avenged, both characters will appear in the Breach, standing to the right of the entrance to the Halls of Knowledge.
  • Once purchased from in the Gungeon, Trorc will appear near the entrance to the Halls of Knowledge, opening a Hegemony Credit.png shop to unlock realism-themed items and guns.
  • Right in the middle of the lower level is the Hero of Time Statue.
  • Once freed in the Gungeon, Doug may appear to the right of the Hero of Time Statue, opening a Hegemony Credit.png shop to unlock items and guns. Dougs appearance in the Breach is not constant, and whether or not Doug is present is randomised each time the Breach is loaded.
  • The right side of the Breach is largely barren, however Frifle and Mauser, and the Ledge Goblin will appear in this area once freed in the Gungeon.
  • The north wall of the lower-right section of the atrium has a door leading to the Elevator Room.
  • Once one of his games has been aced in the Gungeon, Winchester will appear to the right of the Elevator Room door.
  • If Tailor has been met in the Gungeon, but an elevator has not yet been repaired, he will appear to the left of the Elevator Room door.

Gungeon Acquisitions Department

Once Ox and Cadence have been rescued from a Cell in the Gungeon, this room will open, and the two will move inside. Here, they operate a large shop, selling a plethora of different item unlocks in exchange for Hegemony Credit.png.

Sorceress's Room

Breach Sorceress Room.png

Once the Sorceress has been rescued from a Cell in the Gungeon, this room will open, and the Sorceress will move inside with her entourage, Circle Knight and Square Knight. As they are unlocked, Daisuke, Tonic, and Bowler will also move into this room, providing various services.

  • The Sorceress allows the player to enter Blessed Mode in exchange for 6 Hegemony Credit.png.
  • Daisuke allows the player to enter Challenge Mode in exchange for 6 Hegemony Credit.png. After 30 attempts at Challenge Mode, this price drops to 1 Hegemony Credit.png.
  • Tonic allows the player to enter Turbo Mode for free.
  • Bowler allows the player to enter Rainbow Mode for free.

This room also contains five alcoves, in which five cosmetic golden trophies will appear after completing certain milestones.

  • Challenge trophy.png Defeat the High Dragun in Challenge Mode.
  • Turbo trophy.png Defeat the High Dragun in Turbo Mode.
  • Gunslinger trophy.png Kill the Gunslinger's Past.
  • Rainbow trophy.png Defeat the High Dragun in Rainbow Mode.

Elevator Room

Breach Elevator Room.png

Once an elevator has been repaired, the Elevator Room of the Breach will open, and Tailor will move inside. This room contains only Tailor, and a large mechanism that resembles the cylinder of a revolver, with a bullet elevator standing out of one of the cylinders chambers. Two buttons to the left and right of the open elevator allow the player to select between their currently unlocked shortcuts.

Once all elevators have been repaired, this room allows easy shortcut access to the Gungeon Proper, Black Powder Mine, Hollow, and Forge. Additionally, speaking to Tailor in this room after repairing each elevator will unlock an item.

Once all four shortcut elevators have been repaired, Tailor will unlock the elevator leading to Boss Rush for free. This is the only way to enter Boss Rush. While entering Boss Rush for the first time is free, subsequent trips will cost 3 Hegemony Credit.png.

Notes

  • If Challenge Mode is enabled, this room will become boarded up, preventing the player from using shortcuts.

Hero of Time Statue

Hero of time all.png

If the Blacksmith has been met and spoken to, a new statue will appear in the Breach, depicting a Bullet Kin, known as A Hero Of Time internally. Interacting with this statue provides the description "A statue in memory of a great bullet.".

Each bullet component delivered to the Blacksmith will dress the statue more, with each component being represented differently. Additionally, after killing the Advanced Dragun, the pedestal that the statue sits upon will be replaced by an Advanced Dragun Skull, as a trophy.

Notes

  • The name Hero Of Time is a reference to one of the titles and iterations of Link from The Legend of Zelda franchise.
  • The Unity object of the Prime Primer shield is called Primer Targe. A Targe is a type of round shield of Scottish origin.

Cultist's Past

CultistsPast.png

If the Gun That Can Kill The Past is used on The Cultist, both players will be taken back to the Breach, before they met. The Cultist, envious of Player 1's main character status, resolves to slay them in an act of petty vengeance so that they can become the main character. The instance of the Breach seen in the Cultists past is starkly barren, with none of the regular NPCs present, not even the Gunknights or Drunkard.

All four sub-doors leading out of the atrium are boarded shut, and the entrance to the Keep of the Lead Lord appears to be sealed with its primer in the correct place. The door to the south, which usually leads to the Gungeon's exterior and title screen, does not lead anywhere.

In addition to these changes, several tables are scattered about the area, and two Magnums are present on pedestals, one for each player.

The entire setup of the Breach in this instance is to facilitate a PvP battle between both players, by removing unnecessary items and exits. Whether or not the starkly bare nature of the Breach in this instance is canon, or is a gameplay necessity is unknown.

Notes

  • PBug.png Possible Bug The version of the Breach seen in the Cultists Past does not have visible brickwork lining the border walls.

Notes

  • The name Breach is a reference to a "breech", the part of a gun where cartridges are seated into the chamber.
