The Hollow Howl ETG |
The Hollow is the fourth chamber of The Gungeon, appearing in Enter the Gungeon and Exit the Gungeon. Since Exit the Gungeon traverses the Gungeons floors in reverse, in that game the Hollow serves as the second chamber.
It resembles a large, icy ossuary and introduces various undead enemies. Skeletons, urns, skulls, and piles of bones line the walls. Coffins will also appear in some rooms, instead of tables.
Lore
When a Bullet Kin dies, their body is sent to the vast icy catacombs of the Hollow for interrment in its many graves and crypts. Sometimes the spirits of these deceased shells return to their original chamber to haunt it in the form of ghostly Hollowpoints.[1] The empty shells of the many dead in the Hollows graves can be mass-reloaded through dark ammomancy in the form of the Skullet.[2][3]
It is implied that the source of the Hollows icy and frigid atmosphere is a Frost Giant[4], who ruled over the chamber long until slain by a monster hunter.[5]
Somewhere in the Hollows winding crypt lie the bones of Nuign the Cursed, a historic Gungeoneer whose corpse is the source of all Curse.[6]
A grievous wound in the Hollow was one of the causes of the downfall of historic Gungeoneer Cormorant, the Aimless Knight.[7]
Layout ETG
The Hollow follows a standard layout, with a Shop and Elevator Maintenance Room. The floor is entered via a standard elevator. In addition, this chamber features natural icy flooring in some rooms, which causes the player to slip and slide when standing on it, but does not affect enemies.
Points of Interest
Invisible Bridge ETG
If the Planar Lead has not yet been delivered to the Blacksmith, the hollow will always contain a large room consisting mostly of a huge pit, entered on the left side with a mostly featureless platform, and the Planar Lead seated on a pedestal on a similar strip of walkable land on the right side.
While the pit appears impassable, there is a thin strip of invisible land that the player can walk on to cross the impasse, with the main difficulty being figuring out its location and shape. Some common methods of navigating the invisible bridge include using the cosmetic shell debris launched from the players guns upon reloading, as these shells will land on the invisible platform, indicating walkable area. This technique is very slow, however, and is easiest on higher graphical settings.
Guns that leave goop such as the Mega Douser are exceptionally useful at navigating the pit, as goop will only be left on the hidden pathway, highlighting the exact path.
Notes
- Wax Wings, Jetpack, Ring of Ethereal Form, Balloon Gun, Cat Bullet King Throne and other forms of flight allow the player to skip the pit puzzle entirely and fly straight to the Planar Lead.
- The hidden pathway is not randomised, and is always the same every time regardless of run, save file, or game installation.
- This room is always a dead end.
- Secret Rooms cannot be connected to this room.
Sell Creep Room ETG
Main Page: Sell Creep
If the player enters the Hollow with a Master Round in their inventory, a special room with the Sell Creep will always spawn. If the player gives the Sell Creep a Master Round and two other items, the player will gain access to the R&G Dept.
Notes
- Opening access to the R&G Dept. prevents the player from being able to sell any more items, meaning that the player should sell any unwanted items before dropping in a Master Round.

Notes
- ETG If the entrance to a bossroom is to the north, the boss of the chamber cannot be the Wallmonger, as the entrance to the Wallmongers bossroom has no valid entrances to the north or south.
- ETG Heavy Boots prevents the player from slipping around on the ice in this chamber.
- Since the Hollow contains a large number of non bullet based creatures, it is possible that Bullet Kin arent the only creatures whose cadavers are interred in the icy depths of the Hollow.
- The Hollow is the only member of the five main chambers in Enter the Gungeon that do not appear in Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead.
