Ammonomicon Gunjurer.png

Red Mage
The School of Gunjuration teaches a mysterious form of Ammomancy, the art of producing bullets from beyond the Curtain.

While casting, Gunjurers will reclaim bullets, making their spell stronger. Wise adventurers should wait until their circle is broken to attack.

Gunjurers are enemies that appear in Enter the Gungeon and Enter the Gungeon 2.

Behaviour

Enter the Gungeon

Gunjurers walk briskly towards the player, regularly stopping to create a summoning circle, within which they summon 6 bullets in a ring around themselves. During this summoning period, most bullets belonging to the player that enter this summoning circle will be caught by the Gunjurer, and added to the ring. Once 6 or more bullets have been summoned or caught, the Gunjurer will launch each bullet in the ring at the player, in order.

Gunjurers will also regularly teleport, disappearing and reappearing elsewhere in the room.

The following cannot be caught by Gunjurers:

  • Beam attacks
  • Melee swings, like those of Blasphemy
  • Instant damage effects like those of the Camera
  • Projectiles that do not have sprites, namely those of the Laser Rifle and Heck Blaster
  • Certain piercing projectiles, including those of the Flash Ray, Kruller Glaive, or the final shot of the Finished Gun.
    • Not all piercing projectiles are exempt, however, as Sniper Rifle, Trident, and Ghost Bullets don't have immunity.
    • Which piercing projectiles are catchable and which aren't is based on a variable within the piercing component of the bullet, set seemingly arbitrarily.
  • Bullets belonging to charmed enemies

When killed, any bullets remaining in the summoned ring around the Gunjurer will fly outwards away from the center of the ring.

Enter the Gungeon 2

Several Gunjurers appear as part of the prolonged summoning animation for the Bullet Collection boss in Enter the Gungeon 2s teaser trailer. Their behaviour outside of this summoning sequence is unknown at this time.

Item Interactions

Bullets caught by Gunjurers keep most special properties they had, such as bouncing, exploding, or flak.

  • Homing projectiles caught by Gunjurers will lose their homing effect, however.
    • This is not true of Bees, such as those fired by the Bee Hive and Honeycomb, which retain their and homing properties when returned by a Gunjurer. Bees are considerably faster than the player, and will chase them down with extremely tight homing, being almost impossible to dodge. Additionally, Bees will deal continual damage, hitting the player multiple times, making Bees an exceedingly poor choice of weapon against Gunjurers.
    • Bees retaining their homing effect when most projectiles don't is a consequence of bee homing being coded differently to homing from effects such as Homing Bullets.
    • Additionally, homing bullets spawned as flak from Gunjurer owned projectiles do not lose their homing effect either. The only gun which does this is The Scrambler.
  • Bullets that inflict Status Effects that have been caught by a Gunjurer do not inflict the player with that status effect.
  • Flak Bullets.png Flak Bullets Flak shots spawned from Gunjurer owned projectiles revert to their regular appearance, losing the enemy bullet shader. Despite this, they still deal damage to the player.
    • This applies to all flak effects, not just those from Flak Bullets.
  • Bait Launcher.png Bait Launcher Meat fired by the Bait Launcher will summon hostile tigers if it is caught an launched by a Gunjurer. This is highly dangerous, as dodging the tigers is almost impossible.
  • Orbital Bullets.png Orbital Bullets Shots caught and refired by a Gunjurer will orbit that Gunjurer rather than the player after hitting a wall.
  • Badge.png Badge + Tangler.png Tangler Tangler bullets caught and thrown by a Gunjurer can apply the rectangle visual effect to the cop.

Other Appearances

Cut Content

  • In Pre-Alpha versions of Enter the Gungeon, Gunjurers could spawn in rooms as early as the Gungeon Proper.[3]
  • Sprites for Gunjurers appear in the assets of Exit the Gungeon, despite the enemy not being implemented in the final game.

Notes

  • Gunjurer is a loose pun on the word Conjurer, a term for a person who performs magic tricks.
  • Charmed Gunjurers will not catch enemy bullets, but will also no longer catch the players bullets.
  • Bullets caught by Gunjurers take on a glowing white appearance with a red border, like most enemy bullets. Despite this, their shape does not change.
  • A Gunjurer can be seen in the final scene of the Bullet's Past, performing his summoning ritual.
  • The Ammonomicon quote "Red Mage" may be a reference to the Red Mage subclass in the Final Fantasy franchise.
  • One of the attacks used by the Resourceful Rat boss in his second phase involves him appearing to use a captive Gunjurer to conjure the bullets.
  • CMV PBug.png Possible Bug In the Chinese Mobile Version of Enter the Gungeon, player bullets caught by a Gunjurer will sometimes fail to change their appearance.
  • PBug.png Possible Bug If a Gunjurer is jammed, the bullets it summons will not appear to be jammed and will not deal double damage to the player. Player bullets caught by the summoning circle will also not appear to be jammed, but will deal a full heart of damage to the player.
  • Bug.png Bug Thrown guns can be caught by Gunjurers, and thrown back at the player. Guns caught this way are also affected by the shader that makes them look like enemy bullets. After hitting a wall, these guns will drop on the floor like normal, and lose the red outline, but retain a ghostly white appearance.
    • This white appearance persists even after the player recollects the gun, although it is not visible in the UI, only in the players hands.
  • Bug.png Bug If a bullet belonging to a Companion is caught by a Gunjurer, that companion may fire bullets with the enemy bullet shader in the future. Despite appearing to be an enemy bullet, it will not harm the player.
  • Gunjurers were revealed by Dave Crooks on Twitter on the 20th of January 2015, supposedly the same day they were implemented.[4]
