Erases all enemy projectiles in the room. Pushes enemies back, and deals a small amount of damage.

Blanks are important pickups that appear in Enter the Gungeon, Exit the Gungeon, and Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead. Blanks serve as a players last resort when dodge rolling has failed, and the enemies or bullets are closing in rapidly.

Effect

Blanks are stored on the players HUD below their health. There is no limit to how many blanks the player can hold.

Blanks have a dedicated button input required to trigger them, which triggers the following effects:

  • Erases all enemy bullets in the room.
  • Prevents enemies from firing bullets for a brief time.
  • Pushes back all enemies near the player.ETGXTG
    • This effect has a 7 tile radius.ETG

How to Acquire

Because blanks are such a vital part of the Gungeoneers toolkit, there are many ways to obtain them.

  • If the player has fewer than two blanks upon entering a new Chamber, they will be restocked to two blanks. This minimum number of blanks per floor can be increased by some items, namely all Ammolets and the White Guon Stone.
  • Random room clear reward pickups have a 10.64% chance to be a blank.
  • The Shop will sometimes stock blanks for sale. The Blacksmith, Old Red, and Cursula may also occasionally have blanks for sale.
  • Secret Rooms and Mini-Reward Rooms may sometimes contain blanks.
  • The Dog and Knight's Gun can occasionally dig up a blank.
  • The 'Blanked' effect of the Chance Shrine gives 1-10 blanks.

Items That Mimic Blank Effects

There are a myriad of different items, guns, and mechanics that can trigger blank effects or blank-like effects in response to different triggers. Many of these effects may not trigger 'full' blanks, instead performing miniature blanks with more subdued VFX and limited radius.

Notes

  • Blanks have a unique icon on the map, showing up as Blank map.png
  • It is never explained how Blanks function in-universe, with various dialogues and ammonomicon entries suggesting they emit a sonic frequency[1], while others state that they send bullets to another plane of existence.[2] There are also some hints that blanks may be psychological in nature, clearing enemy bullets from the players mind[3].
  • Blanks, like other pickups, can be carried over in the the pasts of various Gungeoneers, potentially offering an advantage if the player is able to amass a stockpile.
    • Blanks do not carry over into the Pilots past however, as the ship is technically considered a different player character and the act of switching characters resets the players held blanks.
  • During the second phase of the High Dragun the radius of blanks bullet-destroying capabilities is limited to 7 tiles.
  • The Merchant NPC Old Red appears to be a large living blank, and sells blank themed merchandise.
  • The Blank Shrine depicts Old Red, and requires the player to use Blanks to potentially trigger its effect of spawning a chest.
  • Ser Manuels tutorial in the Halls of Knowledge has a dedicated segment about how and when to use Blanks.
  • According to Ser Manuel, the reason why blanks are automatically picked up by walking over them is because they are sticky from being commonly handled.[4]
  • A plushie called the Cobalt Blue was, for a time, sold on the official Devolver Digital Merch Store along with other Bullet Kin variants, and was advertised on dodgeroll.com long after it was no longer available for purchase. This Cobalt Blue Bullet Kin plush highly resembled a Blank.
    • The gun held by the Cobalt Blue Bullet Kin was bright gold.
