Frifle and The Grey Mauser are NPCs that appear in Enter the Gungeon, as well as being the main characters of the Enter the Gungeon Digital Comic.

Function

Once rescued, Frifle and The Grey Mauser will appear in the lower right area of the Breach, offering quests to the player to hunt members of the Cult of the Gundead. After completing these 'Hunting Quests' by tracking down and slaying enemies within the Gungeon, they will reward the player with 5Hegemony Credit.png and an item or gun unlock.

After completing all Hunting Quests which have set unlocks, they will continue to provide contracts for randomly chosen enemies, and will give only Hegemony Credit.png as a reward.

General Hunting Tips

  • It is advantageous to unlock all shortcuts, since certain enemies are only found in specific Chambers, making it faster to shortcut directly to their location when hunting them down. Additionally, unlocking all shortcuts unlocks Boss Rush, which is a useful way of guaranteeing the appearance of a Boss for boss hunts.
    • The selection of starter guns offered by the Resourceful Rat after taking a shortcut only change after the Chamber's boss has been defeated. If one of the items proves particularly powerful in farming a Chamber for enemy kills, it may be more beneficial to restart before the boss to guarantee getting that weapon again.
  • Hunt progress is saved regardless of the outcome of a run. The player may quit, return to breach, quick restart, die, or win, while still keeping hunt progress.
  • Rainbow Runs are an effective way to quickly gain powerful equipment for enemy hunts, partiularly when utilising shortcuts.
    • Unlike guns provided by the Resourceful Rat, the contents of a Rainbow Chest are different every run.
  • Activating Turbo Mode and/or toggling on "Increase Speed Out Of Combat" in the options menu can greatly increase the speed of enemy hunts.
  • The Marines all-round versatility and the Convicts high damage output make them both ideal candidates for early-game enemy hunts.

Other Appearances

  • Frifle and The Grey Mauser are the main characters of the Enter the Gungeon Digital Comic, which details the misadventure that led them to enter The Gungeon, as well as their initial exploration within.
  • Frifle and The Grey Mauser are the subject of Enter the Gungeon Steam Trading Card 9, titled Frifle and Mauser.

Lore

Frifle and The Grey Mauser were mercenaries in the broader galaxy, until taking an ill-fated contract from a mysterious Killithid to steal an artefact known as the Golden Bird from the planet Donpatchee. While breaking into the temple on Donpatchee to steal this item of religious importance, Frifle and Mauser accidentally alert the temple guards and release the bird, leading to its death.

Now hunted by an angry horde of recently-godless fanatics, and terrified of the wrath of their employer, Frifle and Mauser fled to the Gungeon in an attempt to undo their mistake. However, despite their convictions, Frifle and Mauser were unsuccessful at reaching The Gun, witlessly stumbling into a cell while fleeing from the Gatling Gull in the Gungeon Proper, whereupon they would later be discovered by the Gungeoneers.

Notes

  • Frifle holds the Winchester Rifle.
  • Frifle and the Grey Mauser are a reference to Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, the main characters of a number of high fantasy adventure stories by American author Fritz Leiber.
    • The name of The Grey Mauser is also a reference to Mauser, a German arms manufacturer.
  • How Frifle and Mauser came to be trapped in a cell is different in Enter the Gungeon and the Digital Comic. While in Enter the Gungeon Frifle describes being surrounded by the Gundead, in the comic they unknowingly stumbled into their cell of their own accord.
    • However, this may be Frifle lying in Enter the Gungeon in an attempt to save face.
